The cheap end of this board is a used hybrid saloon, not a small hatchback.
Same as pickup
Hiring cheaply in Batumi does not work the way it works on a flat beach coast. The entire board runs between roughly EUR 27 and roughly EUR 45 a day, which puts about eighteen euros between the cheapest listing in the city and the dearest one. There is no premium tier above that to be priced out of. What you are really picking at the bottom is a type of car, and here that car is most often a Toyota Prius.
In the hundred listings we counted, the Prius appears about seven times, more than any other single model. Nothing on the board is flagged as new, so every car at this end arrived with a history already attached. That combination is why the floor sits where it does, and it is also why the running cost of a cheap car in Batumi behaves differently from the number printed on the listing.
Close to six in ten listings bring the car to you without charging for it, which at this end of the board usually means the airport or the address you are staying at. The other four in ten expect you to come to them, and that is the first place a low daily rate can quietly turn back into a taxi fare.
Roughly two thirds of the hundred listings we counted freeze nothing at all, and about one third take a low deposit instead. On a tight budget that matters more than a euro on the rate, because a frozen amount is money you cannot spend for the length of the trip.
The streets behind the shoreline in Batumi back up, and most short trips happen there. A petrol engine spends its worst fuel exactly in that traffic. A hybrid spends its best, which is the first reason the floor of this board looks the way it does.
The hills begin close to the beach, so anything you drive inland climbs and then descends again. Going up costs fuel in every car on the board. Coming back down is where a hybrid recovers part of it, and in Georgia that return leg is a normal part of an ordinary day out.
By then everything except fuel has already been agreed: the rate, whether anything was held, and whether your listing was one of the roughly half that cancel free of charge. Fuel is the only line the board cannot quote, and it is the line the car at the bottom of the list changes most.
Five things repeat at the bottom of the Batumi board often enough to count as its character rather than as coincidence.
About seven in every hundred listings, which makes it the most repeated single model on the board and the answer most people do not expect. A hybrid saloon with four doors and a real boot is not what the word budget usually buys you.
About five in a hundred. The main petrol alternative down here if you would rather not drive a hybrid at all.
Also about five in a hundred. The cheap end is not only saloons, because around half of the whole board is SUV or all-wheel-drive shaped.
Not one listing in the hundred is flagged as new. Every car at this end has had a first life somewhere else, and the floor price reflects that.
All but one of the hundred cars is automatic. On most boards an automatic is the upgrade you pay for. Here it is simply what there is.
A low headline number is only useful if you know which lines sit underneath it. Here is every line the board itself decides, and the one it cannot.
| Line | How this board handles it | Where it is settled |
|---|---|---|
| The daily rate | Quoted per car. The board runs from about EUR 27 at the floor to about EUR 45 at the top, so the whole market is roughly eighteen euros wide. | Shown before you book |
| Card hold | Roughly two thirds of listings freeze nothing. About one third ask for a low deposit instead of a full hold. | Shown on the car |
| Delivery | Close to six in ten include it at no extra charge. The rest expect you to collect. | Shown on the car |
| Cancellation | Around half of the listings can be cancelled without a fee. | Shown on the car |
| Fuel | Never part of the rate on any listing. This is the line a hybrid at the bottom of the board actually changes. | You, at the pump |
| Supplier terms | Mileage, extra drivers and the rental contract itself belong to the supplier. Batumi Hire Car is an affiliate, not the renter. | Read the listing |
Suppliers add and withdraw cars all day long. Nothing in this table is a quote, and the only number that binds anything is the one attached to the car you open in the grid above.
A narrow board changes what the word budget means. When about eighteen euros a day separate the cheapest car in the city from the most expensive one, saving money stops being a hunt for one outlier. One car in four already sits at or under about EUR 36, so the lower quarter of the Batumi board is a wide shelf you can choose from rather than a single listing you have to catch.
What that shelf does not hold is a row of tiny hatchbacks. Cars with only four seats are about six in a hundred here, and around half of the board is SUV or all-wheel-drive shaped. The bottom end is built out of full size used saloons, with the Prius repeating more than anything else on it. Four doors, a boot and an automatic gearbox at the floor price is not the trade most visitors arrive expecting to make.
The trade you do make is age, because nothing listed in this city is flagged as new. Open the photographs on the individual car before you commit, and if four adults and their luggage have to fit, read the seat count on the listing instead of assuming it from the shape of the car.
